Sometimes you just want a burger. And fries. And a milkshake. I’ve regretted passing by the Soda Fountain a few times recently, until the day I made it my mission to stop and sit. Ironically, the Soda Fountain is inside the Convenient Care Pharmacy, because I sure did feel a lot better when I left there. The Soda Fountain is becoming known for its made-to-order burgers and sandwiches and of course their signature milkshakes.
I arrived at high noon and the hungry patrons were just starting to trickle in both the side entrance and the front door. The weather was cold for a South Georgia native, creating the perfect storm of a cool breeze and a hot meal. Being my first time ordering, I asked for the classic Fountain Burger combo that came with French fries or Cole slaw and a fountain drink. I chose the fries and a Dr. Pepper. You’ll do yourself a disservice if you don’t add on a milkshake.
First, these made-to-order meals are freshly prepared for each individual customer. You won’t find any hamburgers or French fries basking in the glow of a heat lamp waiting to be thrown into a plastic wrapper. Good food takes time. You’ll have to wait a few minutes for yours but this is quality over quantity. The burger patty was slightly irregular (which I like because that means a real person just patted it out), medium well done, and sized just a little bigger than the buns that contained it. There was a faint char-grill flavor that complimented the bread, tomato, lettuce and condiments. I appreciated the fact the buns were toasted. As a matter of fact, the top bun had a round black smudge indicating the care taken not to just make a hamburger, but to complete the ensemble. Nobody likes cold buns.
The French fries are slender, but not too skinny. They are cut in such a way that one side maintains the skin and offers a faint rawness to their flavor. A pleasant surprise was the shredded cheese that was sprinkled all over the pile of potatoes.
The milkshake consisted of Haagen Daz ice cream, whole milk, and whipped cream with a cherry on top. This shake was creamy and thick alright, but not so thick that you blow your eyeballs out straining to get a little taste of chocolate.
As for portion size, which is always important, there was plenty of hamburger and plenty of fries to satisfy even the greediest eater such as myself. The ambiance was refreshingly peaceful. Even though the dining room was full and the kitchen was busy, there was not a lot of extraneous noise.
The Soda Fountain is a great place to get an even greater burger. And fries. And milkshake. Located in Moultrie, the Soda Fountain is not out-of-the-way; it is on the way.
