When I asked a friend of mine familiar with Americus about a hometown place to eat they said, “The Roman Oven.” I love food; specifically, I love pizza, no matter the toppings, the ingredients or the occasion. My first thought was “How can I go wrong with a place that serves pizza called The Roman Oven?”
I followed my GPS to the recommended restaurant for a late lunch. The glass window front informs the customer this pizza is the best around. First impressions bring to mind the words family, friendly and fun. The décor is made up of pop culture references as well as regional favorites, surrounded by splotches of color from floor to ceiling.
I could hardly wait to get to my booth after my first trip to the buffet and salad bar. The first slice was like a Greek salad baked onto a crispy crust. Melted feta cheese, spinach, and mushrooms set a high bar on the flavor meter. Next, a slice consisting of bacon, black olives, banana peppers, pepperoni, green olives, and tomatoes hit every taste bud. Third, the classic pepperoni was also the right temperature and the circles of pepperoni were curled up ever so slightly.
The crust on every slice was a meal unto itself; there’s no doubt The Roman Oven makes its own dough fresh every day. The pizza sauce is also very prevalent with a sweetness that compliments the team of savory flavors.
The macaroni and cheese, which I suspect is also made in-house, will appeal to the kid in all of us that longs for an actual thick and creamy cheese sauce.
The salad bar is also very plentiful with all the usual suspects but also accommodates the patron that likes banana peppers, both types of olives, beets, eggs, and other vegetables. The blue cheese definitely does not come out of a bottle and there are enough dressings to satisfy anyone’s preference. Parmesan cheese, fountain drinks, utensils, and other side items are all available without having to ask for them.
The Roman Oven is the perfect place to sit back, relax and eat to your heart’s content. Don’t forget that they do more than pizza: pasta, burgers, wings, subs, and tacos are also on the menu. If you find yourself hungry in Americus, The Roman Oven Pizzeria is the place to go.
