On September 15, 2018, local DJ Luke Wilson, the Greater United Way of Valdosta, the Haven, and Living Bridges Ministry hosted the second annual End of Summer event at Drexel Park. This year’s luau theme included surf board’s with the names of many local businesses scattered throughout the park as well as free leis being handed out to the families as they arrived. Approximately 200 people attended the event.
The local non-profits and food vendors who participated in the event included:
• The Sno Cone Place
• Pink Divas Glam Boutique
• Big Time Inflatables
• Bright Lights and Big Sound DJ Service
• Frances Lake Baptist Church
• Greater Valdosa United Way
• Living Bridges
• the Haven
• Halcyon Hospice
• Future Now
• Cowboys Fire Pit and Grill from Lake Park
The main goal of the event was to put the community in contact with services provided by local non-profits. Many of the organizations who participated in the event hosted games and gave away prizes. The games were free for everyone to participate in while the food vendors on hand sold a variety of menu items.
The event started at 5 p.m. and ran until 9 p.m. Promptly at 5, several families arrived and the festivities quickly took off. At Halcyon Hospice, children were allowed to make their own leis while participants in other booths played games or gathered information on many of the services offered throughout the community.
This is the second year in a row that Luke Wilson has helped to put on the End of the Summer event. Many thanks go to his hosting partners The Greater Valdosta United Way, the Haven, and Living Bridges Ministry who worked hard putting the event together and helping to make it a huge success. Wilson encourages local non-profits in the area who would like to participate in next year’s event to contact him through his website here.
